Job Description

The Chordoma Foundation is seeking a motivated and experienced individual to catalyze the development of new therapies for chordoma, a rare type of bone cancer with no approved systemic therapies. To date, the Foundation has developed 24 chordoma cell lines and 12 patient-derived xenograft models, launched a Drug Screening Program to test therapeutic concepts in these models, and helped bring seven treatments into clinical trials. To continue to drive chordoma research at a pace consistent with the urgency felt by patients and families, we’re launching the world’s first R&D laboratory that’s 100% devoted to advancing discoveries and developing new therapeutic options for chordoma. In this position, you’ll play an outsized role in revealing new features of chordoma biology and developing new treatments. Specifically, you will:
• Support ongoing, cutting-edge projects in the chordoma research community
• Help identify and validate new therapeutic targets in chordoma
• Explore opportunities for drug repurposing in chordoma
• Assist in new drug discovery efforts
• Execute translational experiments to unravel therapeutic mechanisms

In this position you’ll be involved in studies spanning the entire chordoma research landscape and will have the opportunity to pursue the most promising scientific avenues across a variety of domains, technologies and therapeutic modalities. You’ll advance research both by supporting the work of academic investigators and biopharma companies, and by addressing research hypotheses posed internally, using Foundation-owned biospecimens and disease models. As the first hire at the Foundation’s new laboratory, you will have the unique and exciting opportunity to set up and organize the lab according to your vision, manage its operation, and make a transformative impact on chordoma research.

• New, full-time position on the Chordoma Foundation’s growing research team; first bench scientist in the Foundation’s new lab
• Position is lab-based, with 80-90% of time being directed towards lab work focused on target discovery and validation, drug discovery, and translational cancer research
• Flexible work schedule
• Occasional travel (2-4 times per year) required for team meetings and Foundation research conferences
• Reports to the Head of Target Discovery & Translational Research
• Job title and compensation are flexible and commensurate with experience
• Preferred start date is January 2022

• Conduct experiments to support ongoing target validation efforts, and elucidate mechanisms of therapeutic response and resistance
• Assume responsibility for all in vitro aspects of the Drug Screening Program, including performing drug testing in chordoma cell lines, conducting supporting experiments on study samples (i.e. cell lines and xenograft tumors) to understand therapeutic mechanisms, and posting in vitro and in vivo results publicly
• Support the discovery and evaluation of new drug candidates in partnership with academic and industry partners
• Assume responsibility for resource banking and distribution (disease models, data, biospecimens, Drug Screening Program study samples)
• Track inventory of lab supplies and reagents, and order new supplies when necessary
• Meticulously record experimental details in a lab notebook, manage data storage and backup, and prepare data for presentation to multiple audiences
• Establish new SOPs and protocols for lab processes and experiments
• Work closely with the Head of Target Discovery & Translational Research to prioritize therapeutic agents – new and repurposed – to take forward into clinical trials
• Coordinate with staff to keep the research section of the Foundation’s website updated

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in biology, biochemistry, cell biology, cancer biology, or related field and 5+ years of experience working in a laboratory focused on biology or cancer research
• Experience with mammalian/cancer cell culture, cell viability assays (e.g. CellTiter-Glo), western blotting, drug inhibition assays, microscopy/imaging, flow cytometry, siRNA, and other cell-based assays, along with associated instrumentation
• Demonstrated ability to manage a lab, along with inventory management and procurement of supplies and other consumables
• Highly organized, motivated, tenacious, a desire to spend 80-90% of your time in the lab
• Ability to effectively multitask and deliver results across multiple projects
• Ability to communicate results and issues clearly and effectively, and work productively within a team environment
• Must be legally authorized for employment in the U.S. and able to relocate to the Durham, North Carolina area. We are not able to sponsor visas at this time.

The Chordoma Foundation offers a competitive salary and benefits package including:
• 100% employer-sponsored health and dental insurance plans
• Vision insurance
• Short and long-term disability insurance
• Life insurance
• SIMPLE IRA with company matching
• Holidays and paid time off
• Support for professional development, learning, and skills building
• Highly nimble, efficient, and tech-enabled work environment
• Personal connection with the patients and families whose lives your work will touch
