Redbud Labs is expanding a small, multi-disciplinary team of engineers developing a breakthrough solution for automated sample preparation.
This position will design, prototype, and test electromechanical systems, including motor assemblies, temperature control systems, manufacturing jigs, etc. The Instrumentation Engineer will define requirements, design and implement solutions (including management of build, test and iteration), and lead design review / qualification activities. Organizational skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. A strong sense of user empathy is critical. This is a high-visibility role that presents unusual opportunity to gain diverse experience and to grow with the company. A successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the conception of new products and to be an inventor on patents.
This position will help define and execute development plans for novel instrumentation for microfabrication and biochemical assays. This includes defining user requirements and product specifications, preparing design concepts for critical review, and drafting practical devices to meet product requirements. The Project Engineer will advise senior
management on the system development roadmap, including opportunity identification, setting project goals, and
• Communicate the purpose, status, and results of your work at all levels, up to and including the CEO.
• Execute work to meet program deadlines, including setting and tracking of systems-related goals.
• Closely adhere to appropriate safety and environmental regulations. Create a safety-first mentality among all participants in Redbud’s systems activities.
• Keep the lab running smoothly: identify and resolve issues related to management of vendors and contractors

Demonstrated success in Mechanical Engineering a prerequisite. Key skills include thermal modeling, FMEA, and DFM/A. Ability to design and troubleshoot at a conceptual level across the major engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software) is preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience in real time systems, temperature control, or life science instrumentation.
Independence is encouraged, teamwork is essential. The candidate must be motivated and self-directed, yet eager to learn about users' pain points and think creatively about how to relieve them. The position is part of a small team working quickly to bring assays to market. Regular interactions with this team will require clear communication of goals and opportunities, an ability to extract clear specifications from users, and a desire to work along-side group members to achieve our common goals.
Typical training for this position will be in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. Must have at least 4 years’ experience, typically a master’s degree (MS) or equivalent industrial experience, and a portfolio of prior work in mechanical engineering.
