Job: Data Scientist, Locus Biosciences, Morrisville, NC
Locus Biosciences is seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial applicant to join our team as a full-time Data Scientist. This individual will be responsible for helping our scientists and clinical team design and analyze robust, sufficiently powered experiments, delivering intuitive summary reports to decision makers, and helping build a growing team of like-minded individuals. The ideal candidate will be able to implement these workflows using traceable, versioned, and distributed pipelines and data warehouses with vendor-agnostic design-patterns, and to deliver the outputs of these workflows using modern, interactive dashboards that enable rapid distribution of results. Candidates should have a passion for data-driven decision making, bringing life-saving treatments to patients, and solving pressing biomedical challenges by leveraging extensive datasets for insight into complex and poorly understood systems. The successful execution of the responsibilities of this role will accelerate the clinical deployment of Locus’ phage therapies, improve our synthetic biology platform, and enhance our understanding of complex microbiome diseases. This individual must be able to communicate effectively in formal and informal settings and be able to work well within a team.
Responsibilities will include:
50% effort: Workflow implementation – Developing and deploying analytic frameworks to support experimental designs and analyses of results. Help to build and maintain Locus’ distributed data resources to collect and aggregate experimental results.
30% effort: Reporting– dashboard development to rapidly return results to researchers and design makers; track Key Performance Indicators for various teams and assets; automation of document generation for technology transfer and internal reports.
20% effort: Management of multiple projects, including reviewing, interpreting, and recording results; maintaining lab records in Electronic Lab Notebooks; preparing materials to facilitate team meetings and broader presentations inside and outside the company.
Candidate must possess:
A MS, PhD, or equivalent level of professional experience in Data Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related quantitative field
Experience using distributed source control versioning systems
Working knowledge of genetics and/or microbiology
Ability to structure, implement and maintain study plans in the face of evolving projects & programs
Willingness to develop solutions to difficult objectives independently and consistently
Experience with distributed computing infrastructure
Familiarity with open-source bioinformatics tools, algorithms, and relevant literature
Ability to derive relevant biological insights/conclusions from the outputs of bioinformatics analysis
Ability to communicate findings and grasp new concepts quickly
Proficiency in at least two programming languages
Hands-on experience with biostatistics
Hands on experience with at least one cloud compute provider
Experience with bash, python, Julia, and/or R
Experience with SQL and remote database system management
Experience automating workflows with RESTful APIs
Experience working with lab automation or high-throughput screening technologies
Desire to build automated feedback systems to improve operational excellence over time
Working knowledge of CRISPR/Cas systems
