We seek a motivated Senior Research Scientist to join the Therapeutic Discovery group. This is a chance to help shape the company's future pipeline, as you will be responsible for the pursuit and discovery of new disease programs. You will utilize your talents to perform cutting-edge research to generate data that will drive decisions around new disease opportunities. Your primary role will be to manage external research collaborations, while multi-tasking internal studies to evaluate different disease targets.
You will lead one or more projects and/or programs to enable the discovery and evaluation of novel rAAV therapies. You will be expected to drive scientific strategy and independently design and execute experiments using a wide variety of cell and molecular biology techniques in order to test the therapeutic potential of rAAV vectors. This position requires a strong cell biology and neuroscience background. This is an approximately 50% lab-based position in a BSL II material laboratory.
Contribute to and drive scientific strategy for Therapeutic Discovery programs
Act as the scientific lead on a specific disease program or platform project
Independently design and execute experiments using cell-based assays
Independently analyze and interpret data and present results to project teams
Conduct complex molecular cloning and preparation of rAAV transgene constructs
Perform advanced plasmid DNA purification by miniprep and maxiprep
Maintain multiple cell types in culture (primary rodent cells, differentiated iPSCs), perform transient transfection and rAAV transduction experiments for gene expression
Develop and optimize mRNA (qPCR), protein (ELISA, Western blot, ICC) and functional assays (calcium imaging, multi-electrode arrays)
Manage external projects and/or programs
Manage one of more staff of scientists and/or research associates
Manage interactions with external parties such as vendors, CROs, etc.
Contribute to technology development related to cell biology
Ensure accurate and up-to-date records of laboratory activities via electronic documentation
Technical writing of procedures, protocols, and reports
Monitor, maintain and update knowledge of instrumentation and laboratory needs
Execute laboratory work plan/schedule developed with input from supervisor or senior team members
Ph.D. in neuroscience, molecular, cell, or neurobiology or other relevant scientific area, with minimum 5+ years' experience
Cell culture experience is required
Cell-based assay development experience is required
Strong written and verbal communications, including critical thinking skills
Demonstrated experience effectively managing multiple projects and staff and troubleshooting experiments, and is an excellent problem-solver who thrives on solving scientific challenges
Must be a self-motivated and driven professional who can effectively perform in a rapidly changing, small company environment
Must be able to work independently, but is also a team player with strong collaborative skills
Must have strong attention to detail, along with strong organizational and documentation (inclusive of notebook management) skills
Previous iPSC disease modeling experience
Previous drug discovery and project management experience is desired
Relevant knowledge and industrial experience in the field of gene therapy development is preferred
