Job Description


The UNC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is seeking a Clinical or Research Assistant/Associate Professor with expertise in bioinformatics to support the Department’s three coequal missions: 1) provide exceptional, comprehensive pathology and laboratory medicine clinical services; 2) teach clinical and scientific concepts of pathology and laboratory medicine, and mechanisms of disease to a wide variety of learners; and 3) advance the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine through innovative research spanning the spectrum from basic to translational to clinical.

The individual will be responsible for overseeing the development and execution of software for advanced data analysis tasks to support the evaluation, development, and operation of clinical genomic testing at McLendon Clinical Laboratories of UNC Hospitals. In addition, this individual will design and direct a bioinformatics and informatics course for Pathology graduate students as well as coordinate teaching of key bioinformatics and informatics concepts to other learners. Finally, this individual will be the primary technical liaison with computer science, bioinformatics, and informatics groups across the medical center and greater UNC community. This position requires experience in a Linux computing cluster environment, programmatic database queries, management of large data sets, data mining, statistical analysis, and strong communication skills.

Principle Functions:
50% - Lead computational sequence processing and quantitative analysis of clinical genomics data toward clinical assay and software evaluation, validation, and implementation.
30% - Teach graduate students, residents, fellows, and other learners about concepts in bioinformatics and informatics necessary for the current and future practice of pathology and laboratory medicine.
10% - Function as bioinformatics liaison between the Department, McLendon Clinical Laboratories, and other relevant bioinformatics/informatics groups at UNC
10% - Design and conduct computational experiments related to analysis of genomics data

Job Requirements


Educational Requirements:
1.) A PhD in bioinformatics, genetics, computer science, mathematics, physics, genetics,
statistics, computational biology, or relevant field is required.
Or
2.) An MD with fellowship experience in bioinformatics or demonstrated expertise in bioinformatics.

Qualifications and Experience:
The candidate must have at least three years of experience in DNA or RNA sequence analysis, Linux shell scripting, working in a cluster computing environment, R, and at least one of Python, Java, C/C++, or Perl. The candidate must have strong communication skills, especially with individuals with limited computational experience, and be ready to work within a clinical environment. Experience working in a clinical, translational, or research support environment, with cloud technologies (Docker, OpenStack), JavaScript, and SQL is preferred. An inclination for operational management, with a proven track record of successful project management is desirable. Experience with clinical laboratory testing is desirable.
