BDTI is currently looking for an exceptional Engineering Leader to join the devices innovation R&D team and serve a leadership role for device, disposable and instrument development, bridging both our devices and life sciences innovation teams. ?The candidate will serve on a multi-disciplinary team developing novel technologies to improve the lives of patients worldwide. ?In particular, the Associate Director will lead R&D teams in the development and testing of medical devices and diagnostics including, for example, technologies for the detection of infectious diseases, delivery of drugs, patient interfaces, pre-analytical sample processing and other challenges covering many of BD’s product lines. ?
The successful candidate is expected to bring deep knowledge of medical devices, good engineering practices, systems development, device/biology interactions (both human and microbiological), optical instrumentation and project management. Since the position will bridge the two innovation groups, applied experience in life sciences as well as medical device development is key. ?This position will also oversee human and lab field testing of various medical device and diagnostic platforms.
The successful candidate will be a proven project and people leader with excellent communication skills. ?He/she will interact directly with both internal and external stakeholders including senior collaborators/partners whether they be Academic, Industrial, Government, or NGO. ?Other responsibilities include collaborating with engineers, algorithm developers, biologists, physicians, QA, regulatory, and marketing functions for the successful execution of technology and product development programs. ?The ability to work cross-functionally and with multi-disciplinary teams is essential.
Lead multi-disciplinary technical projects and ensure timely completion of milestones
Work with department Directors, external stakeholders, and business R&D leaders to plan projects, develop budgets, and define deliverables and timelines
Seek, source, and evaluate new technologies in support of business strategic initiatives
Interface with outside collaborators to define projects and ensure successful completion of deliverables
Provide clear and timely communications, including written reports, oral presentations, and status updates to internal and external stakeholders
Maintain technical expertise in design, systems development, and biology/device interfaces, including sample preparation, diagnostic development, and medical device development
Coordinate regular literature reviews and interactions with key academic and business players in the field
Experience with designing both invasive and non-invasive devices that interface with the human body
Demonstrated ability to identify and evaluate early stage technologies by quickly prioritizing and addressing critical questions resulting in good business go/no go decisions
Ability to come up to speed quickly in new spaces, especially those outside current area of expertise
Excellent problem solving skills required
Ability to work with the strategic marketing function to develop target product profiles and ensure understanding of the medical space of interest
Ability to manage combined internal and external engineering teams and deliverables
Prior experience with life sciences applications including infectious disease detection and treatment, oncology, and cellular analysis
Prior experience in development of medical device technologies and products
Expertise across a wide range of clinical sample types and processing methods (blood, urine, swabs, etc.)
Prior experience designing low cost disposables for the processing of biological samples
Prior experience in developing and executing test plans for investigational devices from pre-clinical bench testing to in-vivo testing in animals and ultimately human clinical studies.
Expert knowledge of good engineering practices including design for six sigma and medical device design control
Strong prior background in laboratory or diagnostic instrument design and prototyping, preferably including optical-based instrumentation
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential
Experience as a leader of project teams with relevant commercial industry experience
Ability to mentor and develop other associates.
Education and Experience:
Advanced degree?(Master’s or PhD) in?mechanical or biomedical engineering or related discipline and minimum of 7 years industrial experience in medical devices and/or diagnostics required (experience in both is strongly preferred).
Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory role, with prior experience managing multi-disciplinary teams.
