Job Description


The Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) and the Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology & Immunogen Discovery (CHAVI-ID), under the direction of Dr. Barton Haynes, providing national and international leadership in the fight against major infectious diseases, is currently recruiting for a highly motivated individual to join our team. The Duke Human Vaccine Institute is an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental institute dedicated to the study of basic and translational science required to understand host-pathogen interactions that can be translated to vaccines against human diseases. We are a team of highly interactive investigators that have expertise in mucosal and systemic virology, immunology, molecular biology, microbiology and animal models.

As a part of the DHVI, the Duke Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (Duke RBL) was designed to support basic research to develop drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines for emerging and reemerging infections and biodefense. The RBL has a comprehensive safety and operations program to provide laboratory and small animal studies at BSL2, BSL3, and to perform Tier 1 Select Agent research. The Duke RBL is comprised of three collaborative research units: Immunology; Virology; and Microbiology and perform service work for the Duke community in the state-of-the-art high-containment facility.

We are recruiting an enthusiastic scientist with broad virology experience to lead the Duke RBL Virology team working on collaborative research to develop medical countermeasures and vaccines to combat seasonal and pandemic viruses.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Design, develop and execute all required assays and model systems to meet the milestones of the research programs assigned to the Virology Unit by the RBL Director
2. Prepare relevant animal use protocols, Institutional Biosafety Committee registrations, CDC compliance documents, and grant reports.
3. Work to improve/optimize existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); Develop and implement new SOPs; Lead development, optimization, qualification and validation efforts for assays and procedures, as requested by the research sponsor / RBL Director. Ensure that all Unit staff are trained in and perform duties in accordance with SOPs.
4. Facilitate collaborations/interactions with the other scientific teams and collaborators/subcontractors working on RBL projects.
5. Organize and present complex data sets to the sponsored research PI/RBL Director and programmatic leadership team.
6. Summarize completed protocols and studies; write scientific articles and manuscripts for publication and presentation.
7. Supervise and mentor lab staff, students and fellows as assigned.
8. Monitor progress of research projects and coordinate with the Program Manager to stay on budget and schedule to meet the project milestones and deliverables.
9. Perform other duties as requested by the RBL Director, DHVI COO and DHVI Director.

Job Requirements


EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Immunology, or scientific related field. Masters or PhD in related field highly preferred. 5-7 years of related laboratory experience conducting scientific research in the field of virology with multiple publications; Expertise with in vitro assays, in vivo models, and molecular techniques.

• Willing and able to:
a. Perform laboratory work at BSL2 and BSL3
b. Work with small animals (mice, ferrets and rabbits) handled at ABSL2 and ABSL3
c. Comply with vaccination requirements when necessary
d. Complete US Department of Justice screening for Select Agent registration (Tier 1)
e. Achieve external certification for independent work at BSL3 and ABSL3

DESIRED SKILLS:
1. Strong background in molecular biology, influenza research and team management preferred
2. Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with international collaborators
3. Proficient in scientific writing: grant proposals, progress reports, standard operating procedures, poster and oral presentations
