Job Description

Locus Biosciences is a leading biotechnology company developing new drugs based on CRISPR-Cas3 genome engineering technologies to treat human disease. We are seeking highly motivated applicants to join our therapeutic genome engineering group as a Lead Scientist. This person will lead a research team to develop a completely novel platform of genome engineering tools based on CRISPR-Cas3 for targeted modification of the human genome to engineer gene and cell therapies that treat important areas of unmet clinical need.
The ideal candidate will have a significant record of accomplishment of having independently designed and implemented novel research approaches and prioritized multiple concurrent projects. This individual must be able to communicate effectively in formal and informal settings and be able to work well across interdisciplinary teams within Locus. Candidates from various molecular biology, cellular biology, synthetic biology and genome engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities will include:
• Drive the execution of Locus’ research strategy through cross functional team coordination
• Independently plan and lead a team focused on the development of Locus’ CRISPR-Cas3 based genome engineering platform
• Conduct experiments across both in vitro and in vivo studies to establish proof-of-concept data sets that drive platform development
• Implement innovative and high-throughput in vitro approaches to develop and optimize the platform across various applications
• Present results to internal scientists, external collaborators, and Locus management
• Implement standardized reporting and documentation procedures
• Supervise and mentor technical staff
Candidate must possess:
• A PhD in biomedical engineering, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a closely related field
• Extensive experience in the latest molecular biology techniques, cell culture and transfection, gene delivery, and/or modern technologies such as next-generation sequencing and droplet digital PCR
• Working knowledge of CRISPR or other targeted genome engineering tools
• Working knowledge of the current status and opportunities within the gene and cell therapy field
• Ability to structure, implement and maintain study plans in the face of ambiguity
• Willingness to develop solutions to difficult objectives independently and consistently
• Strong proficiency in experimental design and statistical analysis
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred qualifications:
• Minimum of 5 years of research and development experience in biotechnology or related fields
• Experience with genome engineering principles, including analysis of on- and off-target effects, gene knockouts and gene editing by homologous recombination, measurement of gene expression, and/ or epigenetic modifications
• Expertise in protein engineering and related techniques (directed evolution, structure-based protein engineering)
• Experience with ex vivo cell engineering, including CAR-T and other engineered immune cell therapies
• Experience with viral and non-viral delivery vectors, including production methods, engineering methods and assessment of in vivo delivery
