Job Description

Transforming Life Science and North Carolina

The NCBiotech Center is currently seeking a Senior Director, Emerging Company Development. This position is responsible for (1) making prudent investments that catalyze the formation and growth of innovative life science companies in North Carolina while providing sustainable financial return to the Center; (2) coaching and mentoring life science entrepreneurs and connecting them to the resources that they need to grow their companies and create jobs in North Carolina, (3) facilitating early-stage life science capital formation in North Carolina and, (4) completing special projects.

Job Overview
This position is responsible for the following essential duties.

Evaluates companies for investment:
• Solicits funding applications from promising companies.
• Performs detailed review and due diligence.
• Identifies key risks that must be resolved or managed; evaluates companies’ potential to grow in North Carolina and to generate financial return to NCBiotech.
• Prepares written funding recommendations that clearly and succinctly describe investment opportunities.

Establishes productive relationships with life science entrepreneurial community in NC:
• Develops relationships with university technology transfer groups, entrepreneur support organizations, service providers, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Finds and develops relationships with angel and venture capital.
• Coaches, mentors, and connects entrepreneurs.
• Provides advice and guidance to early-stage companies to help these companies improve their attractiveness to investors.

Manages portfolio:
• Responsible for recommending 4-6 investments per year, and has ongoing responsibility for managing an active investment portfolio.
• Serves as relationship manager for a portfolio of companies.

Special Projects:
• Develops and leads special projects that has the potential for significant positive impact to the team and/or the Center’s overall mission and the life science industry in North Carolina.

Supervisory Responsibility:
• May hire, train, direct, and supervise interns and, potentially, more junior members of the team.

Represents NCBiotech at various business and life science conferences and meetings, including through presentations and panel discussions.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience Required

Different combinations of education and experience can be appropriate, but successful candidates typically have (1) an MBA and minimally a BA/BS degree in a life science or a related scientific field, or (2) a PhD in a life science or related field and/or (3) a level of professional experience that substitutes for the above. Direct management experience in startup life sciences companies is highly desirable.

At least ten years of life science research, product development, investing, and/or business development experience, with at least five years specifically focused on evaluating life science technologies, products and/or companies for in-licensing, acquisition, or investment.
