Job Description


Arbiom is pioneering the development and commercialization of new technologies for the transformation of renewable non-food plant biomass feedstock to biocompatible sugars and lignin needed for the renewable chemicals/biochemical, feed and advanced biomaterials industries. By unlocking new, high-value opportunities for abundant, renewable plant biomass to provide bio-based chemicals, feed and materials industries with more environmentally friendly choices, Arbiom is becoming the enabler of the sustainable bio-economy.

We are currently seeking an R&D Intern to join a multi-disciplinary team engaged in the development, demonstration, and up-scaling of Arbiom’s biorefinery technology.

The R&D Intern will assist with a variety of experiments and operations under the supervision of the assigned R&D team leader. Specific areas of work may include biomass pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, cell cultures, fermentation, and downstream processing. Work will be assisting researchers, gathering and entering data. This position will be based in Durham, NC.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

o Operating lab equipment (e.g. balances, centrifuges, pH meters)
o Setting-up and helping with experiments
o Following instructions and R&D Standards Operating Procedures
o Media preparation
o Solution preparation
o Preparing samples and entering data
o Ability to be reliable and precise in producing data for R&D team

Job Requirements


o Currently pursuing a B.S. in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or similar
o Completion of at least one year of Chemistry coursework (e.g. General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II)
o Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
o Understanding of the scientific method
o Interest in biotechnology, renewable biomaterials or biochemicals
o Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within team environments
o Ability to multi-task and be flexible as project priorities change
o Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
o Knowledge of Windows Office suite
o A minimal block of 4 hours per work period
