SmartGene is a privately-held, bio-informatics software-as-a-service (“SaaS”) company. We provide web-based suites of integrated software to facilitate gene sequence-based analysis for a variety of clinical, medical research, and veterinary applications, with a focus on infectious diseases. Our customers include national clinical reference laboratories, academic medical centers, government agencies and BioPharma/industry.

The intern will design and execute a market research project, to identify target prospects for SmartGene's software services in the bio-pharmaceutical, CRO and food testing markets. The intern will profile specific companies to be targeted with priority and will try to make contact with key personnel within such companies, to begin the sales process.

Position duties include:
  • Understand how SmartGene's technology addresses the needs of its current customers for genetic sequence data management and interpretation solutions, both for Sanger sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing.
  • Design and execute market research to identify target prospects for SmartGene's software services in the bio-pharmaceutical, CRO and food testing markets.
  • Profile specific companies to be targeted with priority and make contact with key personnel.
  • Adjust existing/craft new marketing messages and collateral to resonate with targeted prospects.
  • Suggest and draft new content for the SmartGene website.

This internship requires a commitment of 20 hours per week over 14 weeks, and is available starting in May.

This internship is supported in part by a grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center through the Industrial Internship Program.
